Today I wanted to talk about gardening for food security. Community gardens and school gardens actively work to address food security. The photo above is of Ken Baker, who has started a food sharing program in his community called ‘share the harvest’. He started this program because he noticed people in his community did not have access to a wide amount of fruits and vegetables. He connects farmers, gardeners and even bakers so that food can be exchanged. This program does not share the same stigma that is sometimes unfairly associated with food banks. People are encouraged to bring what they have an excess of and take what ever they like. However, bringing food is not a requirement for receiving food. This makes it so everyone is able to participate.
